UX content strategy & content design

Content doesn’t have to be mysterious—it’s just an expression created for an audience into a medium and sent through a channel. Content strategy and content design often overlap and stretch into each other’s roles, but in general, strategy sets the strategy and design executes.

When I first entered the field of content strategy in 2018–2019, I thought I was a career switcher. But once I started organizing, mapping, shaping, collaborating on, creating, QA-ing, and iterating on content, I realized I’ve always been a content strategist and content designer.

(Thanks to John Alderman for the conversation that helped me connect the dots between editorial work and digital content strategy.)

As a UX content strategist on assignment at Creative Center, the internal agency at Charles Schwab, I worked on brand awareness campaigns and financial marketing content for various channels, including web, email, social, video, and even an interactive table for a conference booth.

My primary job in this role was to design content that helped people understand personal finance products and concepts, from robo-advisers to options trading strategies. To that end, I did things like:

  • Help clients refine objectives

  • Analyze journeys and conversations

  • Advocate for usability testing and creative testing of prototypes

  • Perform gap analyses

  • Scaffold brand voice for various products and channels

  • Map content to business objectives and recommend success metrics

  • Collaborate with marketing copywriters and art directors

Here are few things I worked on:

  • An interactive touchscreen table for a conference booth

  • A user-centered redesign of prospect website pages on investment products and philosophies, including shopping, routing, and learning pages

  • A video-centric brand storytelling website migration and scaling strategy
